to this roundtable discussion hosted by CSC Hamilton-Niagara Chapter. No matter what part of the design + construction industry you work in, Substitutions appear to have become an inevitable part of the construction process. Our presenters will share their knowledge and
discuss the following topics:
What are Substitutions?
Why are Substitutions Made?
When are Substitutions Made?
How are Substitutions Made?
What Can Go Wrong?
Elsa Cordero Boyden, RSW, OAA
Elsa Cordero Boyden is a registered Architect in
Ontario (OAA), an International Associate with the AIA, and a Registered
Specification Writer (RSW) with over 24 years of experience in the
architectural and construction industries in both Canada and the United States.
James Mansfield, RSW, Dip Arch Tech, B. Tech, LEED AP
James has reviewed a lot of proposed, sometimes
surprise substitutions over the past 40+ years.
He has recommended acceptance of some substitutions and rejection of
many more. James has been chased from a
construction site by a hammer wielding superintendent for trying to enforce the
terms of acceptance for a substitution.
James has been named in a lawsuit for accepting a substitution that went
wrong and cost the Owner a lot of money to correct.

alongside a team of two Specifiers and supports DIALOGs national
